About submitting a disposal notice of a vehicle registration
To understand the steps you need to take before and after buying, selling, or transferring ownership of a vehicle without a sale, please visit Transport Services.
You can only dispose of a vehicle online if both the buyer and the seller have a Tasmanian licence number. Or, for organisations, a customer identification number.
You do not need to submit a notice of disposal if:
- the vehicle is a statutory write off
- the vehicle is a repairable write off
Please cancel the registration and receive a refund of the remaining registration.
Registration plates
- If you have Tasplates, or other special number plates, please ensure the buyer is aware of any ongoing fees. If you want to keep your special plates, you can replace them with a set of standard number plates.
- If your vehicle is wrecked and you have sold your vehicle to a wrecker with registration plates you will need to submit a disposal notice.
- If your vehicle is wrecked and you have sold your vehicle to a wrecker without registration plates you must surrender the plates at Service Tasmania, or provide a receipt for the surrender of plates to another transport authority, to cancel the registration and receive a refund of the remaining registration.
