Key info

  • You can apply for seasonal registration if your heavy vehicle is used seasonally for agriculture or snow activity.
  • If your vehicle satisfies the criteria you get a 40% motor tax reduction on the cost of a 3 or 6 month registration.
  • You must complete an application form (Word, 50KB) and submit it at a service centre.

    About applying for or renewing a vehicle with seasonal registration

    Seasonal registration gives you more flexibility for the registration of heavy vehicles used in seasonal activity.

    With a seasonal registration, you can let the registration expire for up to 12 months, and you do not need to have an inspection or return plates in this time.

    How to apply or renew

    What you need to apply or renew

    Renewing a vehicle that:

    • has a current seasonal registration that expired less than 12 months ago; or
    • is currently registered with full registration no longer than 3 months expired

    You must:

      • complete an application form (Word, 50KB)
      • provide your current Tasmanian licence or proof of identity documents
      • provide an authority letter if you are a body corporate
      • pay a fee.

      To apply for a vehicle or renew a vehicle that:  

      • had a seasonal registration that expired more than 12 months ago
      • has been unregistered for more than 3 months and was not last registered as a seasonal registration.

      You must provide:

      • a completed application form (Word, 50KB)
      • your current Tasmanian licence or proof of identity documents
      • an authority letter if you are a body corporate
      • an approved inspection station report
      • a completed application form on the back of the inspection report
      • proof of entitlement to register documents (if you were not the last registered operator)
      • pay a fee

      You may also need conditional number plates:

      • if your vehicle weighs more 16 tonnes or more
      • if your trailer weighs 4.5 tonnes or more 

      If the vehicle has not been registered before, or you are changing the vehicle configuration, you must:

      You can apply if you are:

      • 16 years or over, or
      • a body corporate, such as a company or an incorporated association, or
      • a government department, or
      • a government authority, and
      • you can provide proof of a Tasmanian garage address, and
      • have a vehicle that has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4500 kgs or more.

      Proving your identity

      There are 2 ways to prove your identity:

      1. Your Tasmanian driver licence

      You can show your driver licence, even if it expired up to 2 years ago.

      2. Provide identity documents

      If you don't have a Tasmanian driver licence you must show at least:

      • one category A document and 2 category B documents, or
      • two category A documents and one category B document.

      These documents must:

      • show your current Tasmanian address
      • be the originals (not photocopies, certified copies or laminated)
      • be in English or provided with an English translation from an accredited translator.

      • Australian birth certificate (not an extract or commemorative certificate)
      • Australian citizenship papers
      • Australian passport (can be expired up to 2 years)
      • Overseas passport or visa (can be expired up to 2 years if accompanied by a current Australian visa)
      • Australian photo driver licence (can be expired up to 2 years)
      • Australian firearms licence
      • Tasmanian Government personal information card (showing your full name)
      • Department of Immigration and Border Protection issued travel documents or Australian Government issued ImmiCard
      • Department of Immigration and Border Protection certificate of evidence of resident status.

      • Medicare card
      • Bank or credit card, with signature
      • Student identity card with photo, issued by an Australian educational institution
      • Department of Veterans' Affairs or Centrelink - pensioner concession or other current entitlement card issued by the Australian Government
      • Births, Deaths and Marriages change of name/marriage certificate (not a church or celebrant document) or deed poll
      • High risk work licence issued by WorkSafe Tasmania
      • Government issued working with vulnerable people or children card.

      If you have changed your address or name

      If your name or address is incorrect on your licence or any documents you use to prove your identity, you must show evidence of:

      • your address, and/or
      • change of name documents.

      To show evidence of change of address you must provide one of the following documents:

      • Financial institution statement
      • Lease or rent agreement
      • Council rate notice
      • Utility account (electricity, water, sewerage, telephone, gas)
      • Aurora+ phone application (name and address details must match the applicant's and be visible when sighted at a service centre. Must not be a screenshot)  
      • Land tax valuation notice
      • Australian Taxation Office assessment (current or last financial year)
      • Certificate of title.

      To show evidence of change of name you must provide one of the following documents:

      • Adoption paper issued by court
      • Divorce paper issued by court, showing your original name
      • Change of name registration issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages or deed poll
      • Guardianship order
      • Marriage certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages (not a church or celebrant issued document).
