About applying for, renewing, replacing or varying a hunting licence

You use the same application form to apply for, renew, change or vary a recreational game licence.

To ensure you get your licence in time for hunting, you must apply at least 2 weeks before you wish to start.

You can select which species you would like to hunt by choosing which licence you would like to buy.

Your plastic licence card will have a unique licence number. You need this number to renew, replace or vary your licence.

What you need to apply, renew, replace or vary

To apply online you must:

  • complete an online application form
  • provide your existing licence number (to renew, replace or vary)
  • provide your personal details
  • select licence type
  • provide a concession card number (if you have one)
  • waterfowl identification test number (required to obtain a wild duck licence)
  • firearms licence number (unless you are a non shooting participant)
  • provide a Visa or Mastercard
  • pay a fee.

    To apply at a service centre you must:

    • complete an application form (PDF, 357KB)
    • provide your personal details
    • select licence type
    • provide a current concession card (if you have one)
    • waterfowl identification test number (required to obtain a wild duck licence)
    • provide your firearms licence card (unless you are a non shooting participant)
    • pay a fee.

    If renewing your licence, you also need to:

    You must:

    • be older than 14 years if you need to use a firearm and,
    • hold a current firearms licence or minors permit (unless you are hunting muttonbird or taking part in a hunt but not shooting)
    • be willing to provide the annual take information as requested
    • have passed a waterfowl identification test if applying for a licence to hunt wild duck
    • have the landowner's permission if hunting on private land.

    • Hunting seasons for different animals are at different times and may be subject to change
    • Hunters must declare any relevant offence they have been convicted of during the last 5 years
    • You can update your personal details during the season at no additional cost
    • To claim the concession fee, you will need to be the holder of one of the followingcurrent concession cards:
      • pensioner concession card (Services Australia or Department of Veterans' Affairs)
      • health care card or named on a health care card (Services Australia)
      • Commonwealth seniors health care card or Department of Veterans' Affairs health care card
      • Tasmanian seniors card
    • Children under 18 years are entitled to a concession only if they:
      • have their own concession card, or
      • are named on one of the above concession cards
    • Game Tracks is a magazine published annually containing information about the Tasmanian hunting season
