Key info

  • You can apply, renew or change your licence online or at a service centre. Licences are valid from the date of purchase until 31 October each year. Specific fishing season dates apply to certain species.
  • You need a licence for rock lobster pot, ring or dive, abalone, scallop, graball net, mullet net, beach seine net and set line fishing.
  • Changes to sand flathead size and bag limits are now in place.
  • Before you go fishing, make sure you are familiar with the recreational fishing seasons and rules for Tasmania. Rock lobster catch reporting will be mandatory from 2 December 2023.

    About applying for, renewing or varying a sea fishing licence

    Licences are valid from the date of purchase until 31 October each year.

    You can add additional licence types onto your existing licence by changing your licence.

    You do not need a licence to fish with a rod and line in marine waters in Tasmania but rules around size and bag limit can still apply.

    If you are 10 or older you can apply for, renew or vary a sea fishing licence.
